area overview
Stony Clove is the “alpine” climbing area in the Catskills. Set high up in a notch on Route 214, the climbing is scenic and exposed. With plenty of moderate climbing and a few quality multipitch lines, Stony Clove is a popular weekend spot. Arrive early, it’s not uncommon for the entire parking area at Notch Lake to be full during busy weekends.
The West Side has classic lines like the Entertainer, the Little Black Dike and the Curtain that are deservedly popular. The East Side has traditionally been popular with beginners and topropers. The Sun Wall and Playground are good areas to toprope, with easy access to the top of the cliff. Mixed climbs like Porcelain Pillar and uncrowded spots like East Side Corner are making the East Side a really great venue.
